The plaque was displayed by Mayor Bill Queen during the Nov. 8 Town Hall meeting.
Thanks to the efforts of Deputy Clerk Renee Schmader, the town met the requirements to change the town?s classification in the community rating system, effective Oct. 1. The successful completion of the process results in the town?s flood insurance rates decreasing an additional 5 percent.
Previously, the town?s flood insurance rates were discounted 10 percent. Now, the town?s flood insurance rates will be discounted 15 percent.
Grants, reimbursements
Town Clerk Mari Campbell?s applications for both a municipal recycling reimbursement grant and a safety grant have been successful.
The town was awarded $1,097 for the recycling grant and $2,500 for the safety grant. FEMA also reimbursed the town $9,510 for beach cleaning and related expenses stemming from Tropical Storm Debby.
Sewer rate increases
A resolution pertaining to increasing the sewer rates was passed during new business. A 9 percent increase will become effective Jan. 1.
Residential sewer rates will go up from $49.97 to $54.47 bi-monthly. Bi-monthly commercial rates will increase from $47.61 to $56.90 for the first 12,000 gallons with the cost per thousand gallons after going up from $3.97 to $4.33.
The costs were passed on by Pinellas County. ?We don?t have a choice,? said Queen.
Land use change
The Wine Cellar property?s land use was changed back to its original residential/office/retail designation and is now conforming to its actual use.
In other news, the town?s comprehensive plan was amended to reflect updates in capital improvement revenues and expenditures projected over the next five years as required by the state.
Procedures for notices in code enforcement matters were amended and advertising flags were defined in the code.
Municipal elections will be held on March 12. The qualifying period for residents wishing to run for office continues through Dec. 14. Seats one and two as well as the mayor?s position will be up for election.
A change in the code regarding building inspections deletes ?inspections by Pinellas County? and provides for ?inspections by any qualified person or firm.? This will give the town the flexibility to hire a building inspector if the Town Commission should choose to do so.
Holiday events
The town?s holiday tree lighting will be Friday, Dec. 7, 6:30 p.m., at Radcliffe Park.
Judging of the house-decorating contest will be Tuesday, Dec. 20.
The annual holiday boat parade starts at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 23, at the south end of Redington Beach.
