Modesto View?s 2012 Coffee Guide
by Ruben Porras
Winter is here and the time is now for The View Crew to help you decide where to go for tasty drinks that will keep the blood in your veins running warm. Modesto has a number of those Seattle-based green and white coffee shops but the true taste and spirt of Modesto is born in locally-owned shops that create more than coffee-laced beverages. These shops also create and foster community spirit by allowing performances and presentations by local artists and musical acts.
Mocha Magic ? 920 16th St (Next to Bank of America)
Mocha Magic is known for in-your-face coffee drinks that are designed to kickstart the bankers in the Bank of America building next door and anyone else looking for a tasty way to fuel a long day.
For a fun boost, try The Jumping Monkey which is premium roasted coffee flavored with banana, coconut and chocolate. If you think you can handle it, try The Cowboy which is an extremely dark roast coffee that infuses five different types of coffee beans. Mocha Magic uses only locally roasted beans from Milone Coffee of Modesto and they also have a full lunch menu.
Bottom?s Up ? Yosemite Blvd and Prescott Rd
A call to Bottom?s Up resulted in a conversation with an employee that is apparently trying to be named ?Perkiest Girl in the World.? She explained to us that the most popular drink on the Bottom?s Up menu is not actually a coffee-based drink.
Ask for (if you can get yourself to speak the words in public) The Sex In Your Mouth Twisted Redbull. The drink is a mind-quaking mix of Redbull, guava, passion fruit, and peach with a splash of orange juice added because you need your daily dose of vitamin C. By the way ? The girl handling your sexy drink will likely be wearing panties or a bikini and not much else. Bottoms up also serves tasty hot lattes and mochas with innuendo-laced names.
Bagels n? More ? 1532 Lakewood Ave, Suite 5
Bagels n? More keeps it simple yet spicy during the holidays. Drop by for a pumpkin spice latte or a pumpkin pie shake and stick around to try a breakfast bagel sandwich. The staffer that we spoke to was excited to talk about the store?s jalape?o cheese bagel. Sounds like a solid way to start a day.
Cafe Deva ? 1202 J St
Cafe Deva is known for being one of Modesto?s most popular music venues and for having a long list of food and drink offerings. Try the Caribe which adds steamed milk, white chocolate and coconut to a base of rich espresso. The drink is topped with whipped cream and coconut shavings. For a bite of citrus, try the Borge which tastes like a Terry?s chocolate orange. The Borge is made up of Mexican chocolate, orange, steamed milk, and whip cream and topped with orange zest for a lively spark of flavor.
Queen Bean ? 1126 14th St
Queen Bean is also a popular music venue and one of the most comfortable places in town to sit and relax for a while. Enjoy your drink or lunch inside a renovated Victorian home or outside on a vast patio. Try the Azteca mocha which combines high-impact espresso, steamed milk and Ibarra Mexican chocolate to create a unique favor experience that you will likely crave often.
Serrano Social Club ? 1030 J St
Serrano Social Club is not your average coffee shop. Tony and his crew have had their work featured in magazines all over the world and they are proud to have received hundreds of positive online reviews from their customers. Every drink that is made by the crew is a work of art. Try the Serrano Mocha ? The drink that serves as the foundation of the business. It is made up of organic whole milk, cocoa powder, honey, chili powder and the finest espresso available. Local organic ingredients are used.
Old Plantation Coffee and Cafe ? 3020 Floyd Ave
Old Plantation has been a popular stop in Modesto for years and is known for their gourmet eats as well as their gourmet drinks. Try their takes on classics such as the white mocha or the caramel macchiato or opt for their signature Giraffe which combines caramel and white chocolate. Sip while eating a chicken pesto panini or a salad that features toppings such as cranberries, fresh feta cheese and homemade Balsamic vinaigrette.
