HARTFORD, Conn. ? A three-judge panel in Connecticut will begin hearing evidence in the trial of a man charged with fatally shooting a Wesleyan University student at an off-campus bookstore cafe in 2009.
The murder trial of 32-year-old Stephen Morgan of Marblehead, Mass., is scheduled to begin Wednesday in state court in Middletown, home to the liberal arts university. His lawyer is pursuing an insanity defense.
Prosecutors say Morgan killed 21-year-old Johanna Justin-Jinich, of Timnath, Colo., on May 6, 2009, two years after she filed a harassment complaint against him when the two attended a summer class together at New York University. Justin-Jinich said she received unwanted phone calls and insulting emails from Morgan.
Police say Morgan wrote about killing Justin-Jinich, who was Jewish, and other Jews at the university before killing her.
