CAIRO (AP) ? Islamist Mohammed Morsi arrived before Egypt's highest court to take the oath of office on Saturday as the country's first freely elected president, succeeding Hosni Mubarak who was ousted 16 months ago.

When sworn in before the Supreme Constitutional Court, Morsi will also be the Arab world's first freely elected Islamist president and Egypt's fifth head of state since the overthrow of the monarchy some 60 years ago.

The court, housed in a Nile-side structure built to resemble an ancient Egyptian temple, stands next door to a military hospital to which Mubarak, 84, was transferred about two weeks ago after suffering a health scare in a nearby prison hospital. He is serving a life sentence for failing to prevent the killing of protesters during last year's uprising.

Hundreds of soldiers and policemen guarded the building as Morsi arrived shortly after 11 a.m. local time (9 a.m. GMT) in a small motorcade. Only several hundred supporters gathered outside the court to cheer the new president and, in a departure from the presidential pomp of the Mubarak years, traffic was only briefly halted to allow his motorcade through on the usually busy road linking the city center with its southern suburbs.

Morsi took a symbolic oath on Friday in Cairo's Tahrir Square, birthplace of the 2011 uprising, before tens of thousands of mostly Islamist supporters.

A U.S.-trained engineer, the 60-year-old Morsi was scheduled to deliver his inauguration speech at Cairo University, established in 1908 as a bastion of secular education but which became a stronghold of Islamist student groups in the 1970s. Many of those student leaders have gone on to become senior members of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, the nation's oldest and most powerful Islamist movement.

A handover ceremony hosted by the military generals who ruled Egypt since Mubarak's ouster follows.

Morsi's Friday speech in Tahrir Square was filled with dramatic populist gestures. The 60-year-old president-elect staked a claim to the legacy of the uprising and voiced his determination to win back the powers stripped from his office by the generals.

Addressing a crowd that repeatedly shouted, "We love you Morsi!" he began his speech by joining them in chanting, "Revolutionaries and free, we will continue the journey." Later he opened his jacket wide to show that he was not wearing a bullet-proof vest. "I fear no one but God and I work for you," he told the cheering supporters. As he was leaving the podium, he pushed aside two army soldiers from his security detail to wave goodbye to the crowd.

"Everybody is hearing me now. The government ... the military and the police. ... No power above this power," he told the crowd. "I reaffirm to you I will not give up any of the president's authorities. I can't afford to do this. I don't have that right."

Morsi's defiant tone, however, could not conceal that by agreeing to take the oath before the court, rather than before parliament as is customary, he was bowing to the military's will.

The generals dissolved the Islamist-packed legislature after the same court that will swear him in Saturday ruled that a third of its members were elected illegally.

The military has also declared itself the legislative power. It gave itself control over the drafting of a new constitution and sidelined Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, which had sought to influence the process by packing the drafting panel with Islamists.

The generals also created a National Security Council to formulate key domestic and foreign policies. Military officers outnumber civilians sitting on the council by about two-to-one, and decisions are made by a simple majority.

In his Friday speech, Morsi repeatedly returned to his main themes ? the will of the people, the importance of unity and sticking to the goals of last year's revolution.

He promised to reject any efforts to take away the "power of the people," telling his supporters: "You are the source of legitimacy and whoever is protected by anyone else will lose."

Victory for Apple as judge bans Samsung from selling Galaxy Tab 10.1 in US

Samsung's Galaxy touchscreen tablets, powered by Google's Android operating system, are considered by many industry experts to be the main rival to the iPad, though they are currently a distant second to Apple's device. Microsoft and Google are also preparing tablet offerings.

US District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California, had previously denied Apple's bid for an injunction on the tablet and multiple Galaxy smartphones. However, a federal appeals court instructed Koh to reconsider Apple's request on the tablet.

"Although Samsung has a right to compete, it does not have a right to compete unfairly, by flooding the market with infringing products," Koh wrote on Tuesday, adding the order should become effective once Apple posts a $2.6 million bond to protect against damages suffered by Samsung if the injunction is later found to have been wrong.

Apple has waged an international patent war since 2010 as it seeks to limit the growth of Google's Android system, the world's best-selling mobile operating platform. A decisive injunction in one of the U.S. legal cases could strengthen Apple's hand in negotiating cross-licensing deals, where firms agree to let each other use their patented technologies.

Opponents of Apple say the iPhone and iPad maker is using patents too aggressively in its bid to stamp out competition.

"The relief being given to Apple here is extraordinary. Preliminary injunctions are rarely asked for and rarely granted," said Colleen Chien, a professor at Santa Clara Law in Silicon Valley.

"That this was a design patent and copying was alleged distinguish this case from plain vanilla utility patent cases. Cases involving these kinds of patents are based more on a counterfeiting theory than a competition theory, so I don't expect this case to have ramifications for all smartphone disputes, but rather those involving design patents and the kind of product resemblance we had here."

The injunction against Samsung comes less than a week after Apple suffered a serious setback when a federal judge in Chicago dismissed its patent claims against Google's Motorola Mobility unit. Judge Richard Posner ruled that an injunction barring the sale of Motorola smartphones would harm consumers.

Samsung will likely seek to appeal Koh's ruling to a federal appeals court in Washington, DC, which has exclusive jurisdiction over intellectual property disputes.

"Apple sought a preliminary injunction of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1, based on a single design patent that addressed just one aspect of the product's overall design," Samsung said in a statement. "Should Apple continue to make legal claims based on such a generic design patent, design innovation and progress in the industry could be restricted."

The South Korean firm said it would take necessary legal steps, and did not expect the ruling to have a significant impact on its business, as it has a broad range of products. It brought out three tablet models last year alone.

Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet reiterated a prior statement from the company, saying Samsung's "blatant copying" is wrong.

Apple sold 13.6 million iPads in January-March to control 63 percent of the global tablet market, according to research firm Display Search. Samsung sold 1.6 million tablets, giving it 7.5 percent of the market. The global tablet market is set to nearly double this year to 123.5 million units this year, according to IHS iSuppli.

Microsoft last week introduced its own line of tablet computers, making a major strategic shift for the software giant as it struggles to compete with Apple and re-invent its aging Windows franchise, and Google plans to unveil a $199 tablet co-branded with Taiwan's Asustek Computer Inc

at its developer conference this week, according to a media report.

Samsung, which has various tablet line-ups with different sizes from 7 inches to 10.1 inches (17.8-25.7 cm), introduced the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in June last year and unveiled an upgraded version, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 II, last month.

The company said the U.S. ruling does not affect the updated Tab 10.1 II, and retailers can also clear their existing Tab 10.1 inventories.

In Seoul, Samsung shares rose 3 percent in a flat market , rebounding from 4-month lows early this week amid concerns over second-quarter profit growth.

The case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, is Apple Inc v. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd et al, 11-1846.

Could the Large Hadron Collider Discover the Particle Underlying Both Mass and Cosmic Inflation?

News | More Science

If the LHC discovers the Higgs boson or other theoretical particles, their existence could help explain inflation, one of the universe's great mysteries

We?ve long understood black holes to be the points at which the universe as we know it comes to an end. Often billions of times more massive than the Sun, they...

Within a sliver of a second after it was born, our universe expanded staggeringly in size, by a factor of at least 1026. That's what most cosmologists maintain, although it remains a mystery as to what might have begun and ended this wild expansion. Now scientists are increasingly wondering if the most powerful particle collider in history, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Europe, could shed light on this mysterious growth, called inflation, by catching a glimpse of the particle behind it. It could be that the main target of the collider's current experiments, the Higgs boson, which is thought to endow all matter with mass, could also be this inflationary agent.

During inflation, spacetime is thought to have swelled in volume at an accelerating rate, from about a quadrillionth the size of an atom to the size of a dime. This rapid expansion would help explain why the cosmos today is as extraordinarily uniform as it is, with only very tiny variations in the distribution of matter and energy. The expansion would also help explain why the universe on a large scale appears geometrically flat, meaning that the fabric of space is not curved in a way that bends the paths of light beams and objects traveling within it.

The particle or field behind inflation, referred to as the "inflaton," is thought to possess a very unusual property: it generates a repulsive gravitational field. To cause space to inflate as profoundly and temporarily as it did, the field's energy throughout space must have varied in strength over time, from very high to very low, with inflation ending once the energy sunk low enough, according to theoretical physicists.

Much remains unknown about inflation, and some prominent critics of the idea wonder if it happened at all. Scientists have looked at the cosmic microwave background radiation?the afterglow of the big bang?to rule out some inflationary scenarios. "But it cannot tell us much about the nature of the inflaton itself," says particle cosmologist Anupam Mazumdar at Lancaster University in England, such as its mass or the specific ways it might interact with other particles.

A number of research teams have suggested competing ideas about how the LHC might discover the inflaton. Skeptics think it highly unlikely that any earthly particle collider could shed light on inflation, because the uppermost energy densities one could imagine with inflation would be about 1050 times above the LHC's capabilities. However, because inflation varied with strength over time, scientists have argued the LHC may have at least enough energy to re-create inflation's final stages.

It could be that the principal particle ongoing collider runs aim to detect, the Higgs boson, could also underlie inflation.

"The idea of the Higgs driving inflation can only take place if the Higgs's mass lies within a particular interval, the kind which the LHC can see," says theoretical physicist Mikhail Shaposhnikov at the ?cole Polytechnique F?d?rale de Lausanne in Switzerland. Indeed, evidence of the Higgs boson was reported at the LHC in December at a mass of about 125 billion electron volts, roughly the mass of 125 hydrogen atoms.

Also intriguing: the Higgs as well as the inflaton are thought to have varied with strength over time. In fact, the inventor of inflation theory, cosmologist Alan Guth at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, originally assumed inflation was driven by the Higgs field of a conjectured grand unified theory.

Anne Vyalitsyna, Alexander Skarsgard Dating!

Anne Vyalitsnya has tossed Adam Levine to the side and chosen to go for a wicked, evil vampire (actor) named Alexander Skarsgard. Yeah, you know who he is. This particular Victoria Secret model apparently has any choice she wants of the cute guys in show business. First, she was prancing around with heart-breaker Adam Levine. I personally think he is a real cutie. He has the scruffy beard look, and has an amazing voice. But I have heard that he is really a jerk. As for Skarsgard, he is absolutely my favorite character in True Blood so I think she traded up. Some of his exploits alongside the other guy who admire’s Sooki have been pretty gripping. He is a pretty good actor too, and was able to pull of the whole “in a trance” vibe last season when he was obsessed with Anna Paquin’s character. Pop On The Pop has declared that they will call her Ana V from now on, which is pretty clever. The only catch is that she must be the one not thinking straight to mess with him because he doesn’t exactly have the best reputation with the ladies. Rumor has it that he is [...]

Haulage Work ? Top Tips for On the Road Snacks

Back in May of this year, in the US, a woman was arrested after an incident occurred after spilling soup down her front while driving. In her shock she stopped her car in a dangerous place oblivious to any traffic. After much mayhem, she was spotted by some studious policemen who arrested her ? not only for reckless driving, but also for driving under the influence of alcohol. It makes you wonder what was in her soup and, also which foods are the most difficult to eat while you are carrying out your haulage work?

Coffee; plain or fancy

To anyone carrying out serious haulage work, coffee usually comes in one temperature ? hot. There are those fancy cold drinks that are sometimes called coffee, but they are basically ice cold milk with a coffee flavour. However, they can be just as cumbersome when they leave the cup and fail to arrive in your mouth accurately. If you are heading home after a long day?s work, or just starting out from home, you might need some caffeine to give you a boost. The problem starts with the lid. They might fit well the first time they are fixed in the shop, but as soon as you try to take a drink, they fall off, move and drip hot coffee all over you. This could easily cause you to take your mind off the road for a split second ? causing disaster. Breaking for a traffic light can also guarantee that coffee will spill, so invest in a cup holder.

Soup

This isn?t a debate about whether you should choose plain soup or one of those full of vegetables that looks more like a Sunday lunch than a soup. This is about hot drinks when you are carrying out your haulage work. Soup is like coffee ? usually hot, hot, hot! In some instances, if you inadvertently have some spillage, soup can cause even more angst than a coffee in your lap. Ouch ? stay attentive, those Styrofoam cups retain heat very well!

Tacos

Tacos are a bit of a job to eat while sitting in a Mexican restaurant, let alone on the road while doing haulage work! Like crisps, however hard you try to have the crumbs fall into your mouth as you eat, they invariably choose any distracting moment to fall off and into the deepest crevice in your vehicle ? which is always too hard to find when your vehicle is stationery, let alone doing 60 MPH in the overtaking lane.

Chilli

Whoever first thought that chilli was the right food to eat to keep you warm while driving probably didn?t account for the fact that this is a meal best eaten with a spoon and fork on a plate, at a table. The same people eating chilli probably attempt breakfast cereals with milk while doing haulage work.

Ribs and Sushi

You need to look at the ribs while you are eating them, to find the meat. That means you have at least one eye off the road ? short answer, don?t do it. Like fried chicken, ribs also have a tendency to coat your hands in goo that really shouldn?t come into contact with your radio controls, or your indicators. And do we really need to mention the wisdom of eating sushi with chopsticks while you drive? Unless you want a poke in the eye and a potential disaster don?t even consider it.

Travel Leisure: How to Manage Your Travel Budget

Every single traveler's objective is to save money while travelling. However, the most of the budget is still spent on flights, accommodation, and food. Unfortunately, most travelers start thinking about saving costs when they are already on a trip. Acting spontaneously is a good idea but the best spontaneous thing is a well prepared one. So, carrying out a little research should be an integral part of your trip preparations. Take some time to search, analyze and choose the options that fit you best. Here are some good suggestions on how to save some money on flights, food, and accommodation:

1) Accommodation

Choosing an accommodation could bring you to the following options:

Hotels. This kind of accommodation is the most expensive one. However, even when staying in a hotel you could save some money if you act rationally. You should know that hotels prices can vary depending on the neighborhood and their location within the city. The hotels that are located in the central area could cost more than those a little way out of the city. So, while planning a trip go to hotels search websites (such as cheaphotels.org for example)and pick one in the right neighborhood.

Hostels. Hostels are the most common option and are not as expensive as hotels. Sure, they are less comfortable than hotels but come on - do you go on a trip to spend all time in your room? Get outside and go for sightseeing. There are plenty of hostels all over the world. Here is one good website to search them - HostelBookers.com

Apartment. At first, renting an apartment may seem to cost just as much as the hotel does. But when choosing this option, you get another advantage that you don't get in the hotel. Unlike most hotels, apartments usually come with a kitchen and other amenities. I guess all the travelers know that having meals in restaurants can be very expensive. Thus, by choosing to rent an apartment is more cost-effective - at the cost of a hotel room you get an opportunity to save on food cooking by yourself.

Free accommodation. This option is just as real as the previous ones, although at first sight it could appear to sound like a fiction. However, there is a world community that would offer such a privilege for travelers. It is one of the mottos of Couchsurfing.com that says "Give someone a home away from home". To use this option you don't need to care about your social status, age, gender and so on. It is not about you being a millionaire or a student; it is about your personality and character because Couchsurfing.com is for those who love making friends, meeting new people, and who like to give and to be given. To learn how the system works go to Couchsurfing.com.

One more tip is that when you are seeking for accommodation, besides checking a price, look at a map, too. Try to find the neighborhood that would not be too far from the places you desire to visit in order not to waste extra money on transportation. Also, be sure to check whether the neighborhood is safe.

2) Flights

The cheapest day to fly. As for saving money while buying flight tickets, the first thing you should know is that the cheapest day to fly is Wednesday. According to the flight statistics, shopping on Wednesday is the best time to buy airline tickets (but don't tell anyone, otherwise you'll help create additional demand on Wednesdays and the rates will grow. Tuesday and Saturday are also fine. Here are some extremely useful suggestions about booking tickets.

Luggage. The thing is to deal with tons of luggage. It seems that the fee for checked bags annoys travelers the most. To avoid it or to cut the number of bags you could pay for, try to put as many items as possible into a carry-on bag. For example, you should put such things as iPad, iPod, camera and keys in the jacket and keep them with you. Once I tried to fit everything I had in 1 personal bag and 1 carry-on bag. That day I got to know that I could carry my laptop separately in my hands thus leaving some space for other things in my carry-on bag. So, along with a personal bag and a carry-on bag in my hands I had a camera, a laptop, a jacket and a toy that I just bought as a souvenir. Yes, I did look like a Christmas tree at that moment but I saved $25.

3) Food

One more thing that requires a lot of money while travelling is food. Let's face it: restaurant meals are hard to resist when you are on a trip - you do want to try the local cuisine, don't you? However, if your aim is to save money while staying in a hotel, avoid asking concierges for recommendations of places to eat. Rather, consult travel guidebooks or websites for the list of the best cheap meals in a city. Also, you could read local food blogs before you go on a trip. Many restaurants sometimes offer coupons and discounts. Nevertheless, always be careful with street food. It is not always safe.

If you rent an apartment with kitchen or you enjoy cooking, there is advice for you as well. In order to save money on food, buy ingredients from small stores and cobble together your own meals. By the way, try not to buy items that require a special tool to open.

Thus, always remember to get ready before any trip.Make a list, compare the prices and sum them up. Remember you can find travel budget related information very easily online (transportation, food, hotels etc.) It may take some time for you to search but later it will save you some money - so consider that a time investment. For a start, it will take some time before you are able to develop good saving habits. So, be patient and reasonable.

We hope you find our tips useful and worth trying out. Have fun traveling and be safe.

Pujols, Angels rough up Giants

By GREG BEACHAM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:24 a.m. ET June 20, 2012

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Although the Los Angeles Angels' lineup has looked better on paper than in the batter's box for long stretches of this season, Albert Pujols and his talented young teammates appear ready to turn that potential into results.

Just ask Barry Zito and the Giants, who couldn't keep up or slow them down.

Pujols hit a three-run homer, Mark Trumbo added a three-run triple while driving in five runs, and Mike Trout matched his career high with four hits in the Angels' 12-5 victory over San Francisco on Tuesday night.

C.J. Wilson (8-4) allowed season-highs of five runs and 10 hits, but the Angels backed him with the highest-scoring performance of the season by a team that hadn't scored more than three runs in any of its last seven games - just 14 total runs in that stretch.

"That's something we want to do every game, is to score a lot of runs early and get to their pitcher," Pujols said.

The Angels got to the Giants early and often. Los Angeles battered Zito (5-5) for eight runs on nine hits in just 3 1-3 innings, starting with Pujols' first-inning homer before the pitcher had recorded an out.

Trout went 4 for 4 with a walk and scored four runs while getting enough plate appearances to move into the AL batting title race at .337, trailing only Chicago's Paul Konerko. The rookie led off the first and second innings with doubles, and Pujols drove him home both times - the 15th and 16th times that has happened since May 1.

Pujols drove in four runs and made back-to-back stellar defensive plays to end a seventh-inning rally by the Giants, who trailed 9-1 after four innings. Trumbo cleared the bases in the fourth, missing a 400-foot homer by inches, before adding a two-run single in the eighth to cap his three-hit game.

"They had an incredible night, and the early runs helped C.J.," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Those guys in the top of the lineup did everything we've asked them to do."

In the California clubs' first series at Angel Stadium since the 2002 World Series, the Angels moved back to a season-high five games over .500 with their eighth win in 11 games.

Wilson wasn't totally sharp and got spotty defense during his 6 1-3 innings. His AL-leading ERA rose to 2.44 after allowing more than two earned runs for the first time since May 11, yet the Angels have won each of their new left-hander's last six starts.

"Usually, if we score four or five runs, we're like, `Yes!"' Wilson said. "That's usually all we need. I was really upset with myself because I didn't feel like I did a good job ... but the offense really helped me out."

Zito had yet another rough outing in a six-year stint full of missteps since moving across the Bay from Oakland to San Francisco. The first five Angels reached base against him in Los Angeles' four-run first inning, and the left-hander departed in the fourth inning with the bases loaded for Trumbo's triple off George Kontos.

Zito has allowed 17 runs and 23 hits in 14 1-3 innings over his last three starts.

"A lot of those pitches were right where I wanted them, including the Pujols homer," Zito said. "So I felt good out there. I was aggressive, I was prepared the right way, all those things. But those guys are big leaguers."

Melky Cabrera added three more hits to his major league-leading 101, breaking Willie Mays' 1958 franchise record by needing just 291 plate appearances to get to 100. Mays needed 295 plate appearances.

Pujols' 11th homer put the Angels up 3-0 after three hitters. Peter Bourjos drove in Trumbo moments later with a sacrifice fly caught on a dead run by Cabrera in left field, and Los Angeles went up 5-1 on Pujols' RBI single in the second.

In the fourth, Pujols walked to load the bases for Trumbo, whose drive hit the wall in deepest center, just missing a grand slam. Angel Pagan had a chance to make the catch, but couldn't - and Trumbo scored moments later on Howie Kendrick's flyout, putting the Angels up 9-1.

"I thought I had a good jump," said Pagan, who had never played at Angel Stadium before this series. "I got on my horse and I thought I had a little more space to make a nice jump. But just when I was going to jump, the ball was already on my leg because I didn't feel the warning track."

NOTES: Angels ace Jered Weaver returns from the disabled list Wednesday to face Ryan Vogelsong. ... After the game, the Giants said they'll place Kontos on the bereavement list while he attends his grandfather's funeral in the Chicago area. ... Giants 1B Brandon Belt extended his hitting streak to eight games with an eighth-inning single. ... Pujols has 11 homers in his last 41 games after the $240 million man began his Angels career with 27 straight homerless games.

Seeping Arctic methane has serious implications for Florida coastline

ScienceDaily (June 18, 2012) ? The ancient reserves of methane gas seeping from the melting Arctic ice cap told Jeff Chanton and fellow researchers what they already knew: As the permafrost thaws, there is a release of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that causes climate warming.

The trick was figuring out how much, said Chanton, the John W. Winchester Professor of Oceanography at Florida State University.

The four-member team -- whose findings were published in the journal Nature Geoscience -- documented a large number of gas seep sites in the Arctic where permafrost is thawing and glaciers receding (they found 77 previously undocumented seep sites, comprising 150,000 vents to the atmosphere). Until recently, the cryosphere (frozen soil and ice) has served to plug or block these vents. But thawing conditions have allowed the conduits to open, and deep geologic methane now escapes.

The team studied the link between natural gas seepage and the melting ice cap, using aerial photos and field data to figure out the number -- and location -- of seep holes.

So, here's the rub: The more the ice cap melts, the more methane is released into the atmosphere -- and the more the climate warms.

Why should this matter to you?

People who live in coastal areas could be directly affected, said Chanton, who analyzed the methane and dated it to more than 40,000 years old.

All this seeping methane causes more melting ice, Chanton said, which causes sea levels to rise and could affect coastal real estate values -- sooner rather than later.

How soon?

Possibly over the next 50 to 100 years, Chanton said.

"Methane is a very strong greenhouse gas that's grown three times faster than carbon dioxide since the industrial era," Chanton said. "As the Arctic warms, the ice caps melt and the fissures open, so methane escapes and causes more warming."

This phenomenon causes sea levels to rise, which is particularly problematic in Florida: "Along the flat Florida coastline, a 1-foot rise in sea level could cause anywhere from 10 to 100 feet of shoreline retreat -- erosion," Chanton said. "For us here in Florida, this is really important because we can expect the coast to recede."

That beach house, he warned, might be in peril: "It may not be there for your grandchildren."

One-stop-benefits-shop available for Washington County seniors and veterans

HILLSBORO, Ore. -- Approximately 60 percent of veterans, seniors, and persons with disabilities are not receiving the benefits to which they are entitled. The result may be poor nutrition, past due medical bills, and utility shut-offs. Washington County's Benefits Enrollment Center, a program of Disability, Aging and Veteran Services, is a one-stop-benefits-shop that can help.

In the past year, the Center has screened more than 500 people for eligibility for food stamps, property tax relief, Medicaid, home energy assistance and other programs. The day-to-day work of the Center is completed almost entirely by volunteers who meet with individuals where it is most convenient for the person seeking help. ?

"Most of the time people don't know what benefits are available to them or they can't make it to an office," said program coordinator Linda Sneddon. "Paperwork and documentation can be difficult. This program removes barriers for many of these people."

In a thank you letter, a client's daughter wrote, "Without your intervention, my parents wouldn't be receiving attention to critical services needed. It will be great to begin accessing services and living beyond a crisis stage. One year of crisis is more than enough. I believe the services people have shared with us reflect a nicer quality of life for my family."

Blasts hit northern Nigeria churches

By msnbc.com news services

A least two explosions shook the town of Zaria in northern Nigeria's Kaduna state on Sunday, the emergency services said, and at least one of them was at a church, a security official said.?

Reuters reported two explosions, while The Associated Press quoted a Nigerian official as saying that a third explosion had rocked the area. There was no explanation for the different accounts but such discrepancies are common in the immediate aftermath of such events.

Islamist sect Boko Haram has often attacked church services in Nigeria, split roughly evenly between Christians and Muslims.?

Witness: Attack on Christians in Nigeria kills at least 15

Boko Haram, which has become increasingly radicalised and meshed with other Islamist groups in the region, including al-Qaida's north African wing, is the leading security threat to Nigeria, Africa's top oil producer and a member of OPEC.?

Regular attacks on Sunday church services are usually claimed by the sect, which says it is fighting to reinstate an ancient Islamic caliphate that would adhere to strict sharia (Islamic law).?

US warns of attacks on Westerners in Nigeria

Islamist militants attacked two churches in Nigeria last Sunday, spraying the congregation of one with bullets, killing at least one person, and blowing up a car in a suicide bombing at the other, wounding 41.?

The Islamists' leader, Abubakar Shekau, has justified attacks on Christians as revenge for killings of Muslims in Nigeria's volatile "Middle Belt", where the largely Christian south and mostly Muslim north meet.?

$2 billion Mexico resort shelved over feared impacts

A Spanish developer said it would go back to the drawing board after Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Friday canceled a $2 billion tourist development in Baja California, bowing to opposition by environmentalists that said the plan was a threat to a nearby coral reef.

Planned by Hansa Urbana, the Cabo Cortes project was to have included lots for 15 hotels, golf courses, a large marina and an airstrip on the southeastern tip of Baja.

But the proposed project is only 6 miles from the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park and its renowned coral reef system.

"The Cabo Cortes project will not be carried out," Calderon said, citing its uncertain environmental impact. He pledged to help investors develop a sustainable new project in its place.

Hansa Urbana said it plans to submit a revised proposal that would strike a balance between economic development and "environmental sustainability." It did not provide a timetable.

Hansa's original proposal envisioned a 10,000-acre development covering a picturesque landscape of white sand beaches edged by mountains and desert about an hour's drive from the Los Cabos International Airport.

The Environment Ministry first approved the project in 2008 and Calderon's announcement caps years of legal battles over permits that were granted and then revoked due to environmental concerns.

The decision by Calderon, who hosts a summit of leaders from the Group of 20 economies in Los Cabos on Monday, was hailed by environmental groups that have campaigned against Cabo Cortes.

"We consider it a great achievement for all the citizens who voted for the conservation of Cabo Pulmo," said Alejandro Olivera of Greenpeace Mexico.

Calderon, a conservative, is in his final year as president and legally barred from seeking re-election. The fate of any new development likely will fall to his successor.

Graphic warning labels improve smokers' recall of warning and health risks related to smoking

Graphic warning labels improve smokers' recall of warning and health risks related to smoking

Friday, June 15, 2012

In a first of its kind study in the U.S., researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania have shown that the addition of graphic warning labels on cigarette packaging can improve smokers' recall of the warning and health risks associated with smoking. The new findings are published online-first in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

In past studies in Europe and Canada, graphic warning labels have proven to be effective in eliciting negative responses to smoking, increasing reported intention to quit smoking in smokers, and modifying beliefs about smoking dangers. However, these previous research results have generally been conducted using large, population-based studies that could be confounded by concurrent tax increases or anti-smoking media campaigns that coincide with the introduction of new warning labels.

"An important first step in evaluating the true efficacy of the warning labels is to demonstrate if smokers can correctly recall its content or message," said Andrew A. Strasser, PhD, associate professor, Department of Psychiatry at Penn and lead author of the new study. "Based on this new research, we now have a better understanding of two important questions about how U.S. smokers view graphic warning labels: do smokers get the message and how do they get the message."

In the study, 200 current smokers were randomized to view either a text-only warning label advertisement, which was unaltered and utilized the Surgeon General's warning and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) testing information that has appeared on cigarette advertisements since 1985; or a graphic warning label version that contained a graphic image (depicting a hospitalized patient on a ventilator) and a health warning with larger text, similar to what has been proposed by the FDA to be adopted in the U.S.

In order to gauge how the participants viewed the layout of the advertisements, the research team utilized sophisticated eye-tracking technology. With this equipment, they were able to measure dwell time (total time viewing various parts of the ad, including the text or graphic warning), time to first viewing of portions of the ad to assess how attention is drawn, and fixations or the number of times they viewed each area of the ad (including the text or graphic warning). After reading the ads, each study participant also had to rewrite the warning label text to demonstrate their recall of the information.

Researchers found a significant difference in percentage correct recall of the warning label between those in the text-only versus graphic warning label condition, 50 percent vs. 83 percent. In addition, the quicker a smoker looked at the large text in the graphic warning, and the longer they viewed the graphic image, the more likely they were at recalling the information correctly.

The researchers say that the new data demonstrates that drawing attention to the warning label can improve recall of health relevant information, which may extend to improving risk perception of smoking. Additionally, attracting attention to the warning before viewing the advertisement body may change the framing of the message in the advertisement body, causing viewers to approach it with greater caution. Finally, time to first viewing has practical application to real-world settings where people may allocate only a few seconds to a print advertisement. Further study on the size, font, color, and location of text may identify the most effective way to draw attention.

"In addition to showing the value of adding a graphic warning label, this research also provides valuable insight into how the warning labels may be effective, which may serve to create more effective warning labels in the future," said Dr. Strasser. "We're hopeful that once the graphic warning labels are implemented, we will be able to make great strides in helping people to be better informed about their risks, and to convince them to quit smoking."

The 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act mandated the FDA to require graphic warning labels on cigarette packages. Originally mandated to appear on cigarette packages in September 2012, the implementation of these warning labels has been held up in court.

Strasser and colleagues note that the current study was designed to gauge short-term recall of the graphic warning information and that additional research addressing long-term recall and behavior changes are currently underway at Penn.

91% Safety Not Guaranteed

All Critics (69) | Top Critics (27) | Fresh (62) | Rotten (6)

Neatly, the script embarks on one journey while dangling the possibility of another: the prospect of taking a sudden leap from comic reality into the realm of pure imagination.

"Safety Not Guaranteed" is most vibrant and vital at its edges, in the way that the characters interact with each other while waiting for something to happen.

It's brisk and assured and never begs the audience's indulgence. No time is wasted. The movie is, at every moment, either funny or pushing the story forward, or both.

The film is modest but skillful and heartfelt, spiced just so by Plaza and company.

Safety Not Guaranteed casts an enchanting spell from its opening scene.

Expectedly funny but unexpectedly touching, too.

A strange, light-hearted bit of quasi-sci-fi, with no small amount of heart.

The material is played mostly for laughs and succeeds in that regard. The undercurrent of lament in Safety Not Guaranteed, though, is what holds the film together.

If safety isn't guaranteed by the film's title, a viewer's satisfaction with this genial, warm-hearted movie pretty much can be.

One central recasting and brutal editorial session away from being a lovely little short film, where its mystery and sentiment is more easily controlled and considered.

With its well-constructed screenplay, sharp dialogue and unapologetic sincerity, this first feature from former SNL interns Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly is its own act of nostalgia...

It should work for either fans of quirky romcoms or Aubrey Plaza.

Around every corner is a scene we don't expect, a joke we haven't heard (plus some inspired visual gags).

For the right kind of romantic, Safety Not Guaranteed offers pure outsider catharsis.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama eased enforcement of immigration laws Friday, offering a chance for hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants to stay in the country and work. Immediately embraced by Hispanics, the extraordinary step touched off an election-year confrontation with congressional Republicans.

"Let's be clear, this is not amnesty, this is not immunity, this is not a path to citizenship, this is not a permanent fix," Obama said from the White House Rose Garden. "This is the right thing to do."

The policy change will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants who have lived in fear of deportation. It bypasses Congress and partially achieves the goals of the "DREAM Act," congressional legislation that would establish a path toward citizenship for young people who came to the United States illegally but who attend college or join the military.

Under the administration plan, illegal immigrants will be immune from deportation if they were brought to the United States before they turned 16 and are younger than 30, have been in the country for at least five continuous years, have no criminal history, graduated from a U.S. high school or earned a GED or served in the military. They also can apply for a work permit that will be good for two years with no limits on how many times it can be renewed.

Obama said the change would become effective immediately to "lift the shadow of deportation from these young people."

The step, to be carried out by the Department of Homeland Security, comes one week before Obama plans to address the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials' annual conference in Orlando, Fla. Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney is to speak to the group on Thursday.

"Many of these young people have already contributed to our country in significant ways," Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano wrote in a memorandum describing the administration's action. "Prosecutorial discretion, which is used in so many other areas, is especially justified here."

The policy closely tracks a proposal being drafted by Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, a potential vice presidential running mate for Romney, as an alternative to the DREAM Act, formally the Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors Act.

Linus Torvalds shares Millennium Technology Prize with pioneering stem cell scientist

It's not often we see Linux creator Linus Torvalds in a tux (as opposed to with a Tux), but he had a good reason to ditch the casual look this week. He was just named as the co-recipient of the 2012 Millennium Technology Prize (often referred to as the "tech Nobel"), an award that he shares with pioneering stem cell scientist Dr. Shinya Yamanaka -- the two will also each get an equal cut of €1.2 million prize fund. Torvalds was of course recognized for the creation of Linux itself, with Dr. Ainomaija Haarla of Technology Academy Finland (the prize's organizers) noting that Torvalds' work "has kept the web open for the pursuit of knowledge and for the benefit of humanity -- not simply for financial interests." What's more, Torvalds also sat down for a fairly in-depth interview with the BBC for the occasion, in which he talks about Linux at length and offers a few thoughts on Google, Microsoft and Raspberry Pi -- you can find it at the link below.
